The ‘BAPS Annual Charity Challenge’ was launched on the evening of Saturday 15 February 2020 at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London – popularly known as the ‘Neasden Temple’.
The official partner for this year’s charity Challenge, which takes place on 3 May, is Trees for Cities – the only UK charity working on an international scale to plant urban trees and create greener cities.
The Challenge brings together more than 3,000 enthusiastic participants of all ages and backgrounds around the country for a fun and healthy way to raise funds for various worthy causes and local charities.
Chris Owens, Marketing and Communications Manager at Trees for Cities, joined worshippers and guests at the Mandir for the official launch. In his address, Mr Owens said that Trees for Cities is “honoured to be selected as the official charity partner of BAPS in this very important year that marks the 100th birth anniversary of the Temple’s inspirer [His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj] and the 25th anniversary of the opening of this magnificent temple.”
Dr Mayank Shah, a leading volunteer for BAPS, said, “His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj inspires us all to care for the environment in keeping with Hinduism’s reverence for nature. During the construction of the Mandir, 2,300 English Oak saplings were planted in Wiltshire, and various initiatives – including a Green Travel Plan in conjunction with Transport for London, the London Borough of Brent, the Metropolitan Police and WestTrans (a sub-regional transport partnership) – have been pioneered to continue this commitment.
“We’re delighted to partner with Trees for Cities to strengthen and empower communities around the UK to create greener urban spaces. We hope that the funds raised during this year’s Charity Challenge can help young and old to enjoy cleaner, greener cities.”
