News & Events
In the interest of public safety, we share some updated information on coronavirus (COVID-19 SARS-COV-2).
Based on current evidence, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) presents with flu-like symptoms, including a fever, a cough, or difficulty in breathing.
The current evidence is that most cases appear to be mild.
- Over recent weeks, several countries other than China have reported coronavirus cases.
- More recently, the outbreaks have been reported in South Korea, Iran and northern Italy.
- A handful of cases have also been identified in Switzerland, Austria, France and Germany.
- New cases are emerging in countries that have not reported cases previously.
- Travellers who have recently returned from affected countries need to follow the Government’s advice.
- In certain instances, they must self-isolate themselves and seek medical advice by contacting NHS 111.
- Full details can be found on the Government’s website here and here.
At this present time, there is no sustained community transmission in the UK. However, everyone needs to play their part in preventing the spread of the virus and keeping their families, friends and the wider community safe.
As part of good personal practice and hygiene, it is important that you follow the advice below.
-
- To reduce the risk of infection of respiratory infections, the World Health Organisation provides the following guidance:
- Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently; soap or hand-gels can kill the virus.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing – ideally into a tissue, which should then be disposed. Wash your hands afterwards to minimise spread.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If your hands touch a surface contaminated by the virus, this could transfer the virus into your body.
- Do not get too close to people coughing, sneezing or who have a fever; they could potentially propel small droplets containing the virus into the air. Ideally stay one metre away.
- To reduce the risk of infection of respiratory infections, the World Health Organisation provides the following guidance:
If you have cold and flu-like symptoms, please do NOT visit the Mandir or attend any public events, including religious gatherings or assemblies. Please stay at home and, if required, seek advice from NHS 111.
In the near future, if the virus does enter the UK leading to sustained community transmission, the Chief Medical Officer and the Government may consider a range of policy responses, which might include asking whole families to stay at home if one of them tested positive. Other measures may include closing schools and parts of the public transport network or cancelling events with large crowds.
We are closely monitoring the situation as it is prone to change. All relevant news and potential impact for worshippers or visitors will be assessed and updates provided should the situation in the UK change.
